The red kite, of which there were only a handful left in the UK in the 1990s, is making a comeback, says the RSPB.

Sightings of the bird have more than doubled in the past year, according to the findings of the charity's Big Garden Birdwatch survey, in which supporters noted the species of birds spotted in their gardens.

It revealed there were more than 5,000 sightings of the red kite during the survey, which took place over one weekend in January.
