More than £53,000 has been raised for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of Liz Monks, the former director of fundraising at the Alzheimer’s Society, who died of cancer in November, aged 48.

The amount raised is more than double the £20,000 target Monks set herself last July to fund a Macmillan staff member to work full-time for one year at the Royal Free Hospital in London, where she was being treated.

Almost a tenth of the total amount – £4,500 – was raised at a fundraising quiz held in London last week, which was attended by more than 130 people.

Attendees included Laurie Boult, head of fundraising at Age UK, Peter Lewis, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising, and Lynda Thomas, chief executive of Macmillan. Lewis and Thomas both paid tribute to Monks, who was chair of the IoF's convention between 2011 and 2014.

Thomas, who said she was a close friend of Monks, said in a statement: "Only Liz could leave a legacy like this. She was one of the most wonderfully passionate people that I was fortunate to spend time with – in both a professional and a personal capacity. In her time working in the charity sector, Liz oversaw an enormous amount of fundraising for so many wonderful and deserving causes."

Zoe Papadopoulou, an artist who was Monks’s partner for 20 years, said: "The success of this fundraiser is testament to the overwhelming warmth of spirit amongst the charity community towards Liz.

"Liz worked for and supported so many charities over the years, but her personal fundraising for Macmillan was incredibly close to her heart and it has been really humbling to see everyone pull together on what became her last appeal".

Donations to the appeal can still be made here. Money will also be raised at a memorial service that will include a live art auction, organised by Papadopoulou as a way of remembering Monks’s life and career.
