Macmillan's Ciarán Devane appointed chief executive of the British Council

The chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, has been appointed chief executive of the British Council. Ciarán Devane started his career as an engineer before moving into management consultancy and then to Macmillan, where he has raised its profile as an authoritative voice on cancer and wider health matters.

Rebecca Wood is stepping down as chief executive of Alzheimer's Research UK to seek a new challenge. She has held the position for 17 years.

The Centre for Ageing Better has appointed Sharmila Nebhrajani as its first chief executive. She was most recently chief executive of the Association of Medical Research Charities.

The National Deaf Children's Society has appointed Helen Cable as director of its children, young people and families division. Previously she worked at the disability charity Scope, where she led the development and diversification of its disabled children and young people's services before becoming the head of business development.

Susan Fiddian has been appointed head of PR, celebrity and communications at Sue Ryder. She previously worked at the RNIB as its lead for public relations.
