Merger creates heritage charity

A national charity for conservation has been established as a result of the merger of five conservation organisations.

The Institute of Conservation is the new umbrella for the Scottish Society for Conservation and Restoration, the UK Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, the Institute of Paper Conservation, the Photographic Materials Conservation Group and the Care of Collections Forum.

"The groups merged in order to be more effective in advocacy for conservation," said Alastair McCapra, chief executive of the institute. "Separately, they weren't able to punch their weight."

McCapra has joined the institute from the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.
