A 'mini-Miliband' for every town hall

The public services action plan has given birth to the idea that councillors should act as 'mini-Milibands', championing the voluntary sector at the local level.

The Local Government Association said it was looking at how members could help embed initiatives such as those included in the action plan launched last week.

"We have to get councillors being 'cabinet office' members for their wards," said LGA voluntary sector spokesman Richard Kemp.

The plan was accompanied by a pledge from the Chancellor that three-year contracts would be the sector norm from next year.

Care services minister Ivan Lewis also said the Government was considering how charities could deliver services such as audiology nationally.
