- The Directory of Social Change has produced the third edition of its charity VAT guide.

The book, written by Kate Sayer, engagement partner at accountancy firm Sayer Vincent, provides charities with advice on how to go about VAT negotiations. It also covers property transactions and international VAT issues. See for details.

- The Charity Commission has issued new guidance on trustee expenses and payments, explaining rules introduced by the Charities Act 2006. The guide covers employment of trustees and compensating them for lack of earnings as well as guidelines for their salaries and expense allowances. It is available at

- Charity technology firm Fisk Brett has been taken over by global software company Advanced Solutions International. Robin Fisk and Ben Brett, the company's founders, will stay on in business development and product development roles. ASI aims to become the UK's leading not-for-profit technology organisation.

- Cooperatives 2008, the annual conference for cooperative organisations and their customers, will be held from 27 to 29 June at the Hilton Blackpool hotel. The event will hear a keynote speech from Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, on growing the cooperative economy. Other speakers include Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, and Peter Marks, chief executive of the Co-operative Group.
