Charities can no longer defer making decisions about a new law, due to come into force in 2012, that will require them to enrol all employees in pension schemes, a leading sector pensions expert has said. Ian Bird, a partner at Foster Denovo, said many charities had decided to wait until the comprehensive spending review because they believed the government might amend Labour plans for compulsory enrolment. However, it will continue with a scheme similar to the one previously proposed.

3SC, the consortium formed to bid for government contracts on behalf of the third sector, has recruited its 1,000th member. This summer it said it would bid with Groundwork UK, the National Housing Federation, and the Shaw Trust to become a prime contractor for the Department for Work and Pensions' Work Programme.

A resource for research into the third sector will be set up by the British Library and the Third Sector Research Centre with a grant of £200,000 from the Big Lottery Fund. The Knowledge Portal will provide an online catalogue of all published research on the sector. It will become operational next spring.
