Money matters: a new community share issue and the Better Banking Campaign

A social enterprise is launching a £1m community share issue to raise money for an energy project. H2oPE, which runs a hydro-electric scheme at New Mills in Derbyshire, is aiming to raise the money for three more such schemes, one in Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales and two in Stockport.

An event will be held for prospective investors at the Hub in King's Cross on 2 June.

Thirty-seven parliamentary candidates who signed up to support a charity-led campaign for fairer banking in the UK have been elected to the new parliament. The Better Banking campaign, backed by more than 500 charities and third sector leaders, calls for greater transparency in lending, commitments to lending in deprived areas and a cap on interest rates.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation has warned that "absurd" legislative proposals on which HMRC is consulting could make it illegal for charities to ask donors to sign Gift Aid forms. The institute said the proposal, designed to prevent "deliberate wrongdoing" by tax advisers, would make it illegal to give advice that reduced anyone's tax liability.
