David Ainsworth's round-up of what's happening in the finance world

- Charities should be prepared for a new unified framework governing how HM Revenue & Customs carries out tax compliance checks, the regulator has warned. From 1 April, HMRC will have a single set of powers and safeguards covering PAYE, VAT, income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax and the construction industry scheme. These include new powers to visit charities. See www.hmrc.gov.uk/about/new-compliance-checks.htm.

- A free conference for the finance directors and chief executives of grant-making charities will be held at the offices of accountancy firm Horwath Clark Whitehill in London on 25 March. Speakers include Pesh Framjee, head of the firm's not-for-profit unit, and James Brooke-Turner, chief executive of grant-maker the Nuffield Foundation. See the events section at www.horwathcw.com.

- A social investment fund has been set up to help organisations that provide alternatives to traditional education for young people. The £300,000 Learning Launchpad fund, established by the Young Foundation, will offer investment packages of up to £100,000 to innovative education providers.

- A conference on how to adapt to changing financial environments is being held by accountancy firm Sayer Vincent at the University of Westminster on 25 June. Sessions will address resource management, handling uncertainty and scenario planning. Speakers include Adrian Poffley from the World Bank, who is responsible for reviewing his organisation's performance management.
