Move on dormant accounts likely

The strongest signal yet that the Government will authorise the transfer of billions of pounds in dormant accounts to charities was given this week when several trusts formed a commission to examine how best to spend the money. Chancellor Gordon Brown is expected to give the go-ahead in his pre-Budget report next week.

The Commission on Unclaimed Assets is being set up by the Scarman Trust in partnership with eight charities, including the Rowntree Foundation and the Carnegie UK Trust. It will publish a report next June.
