Annetts has taken the helm at the YWCA after a selection process in which young women from various YWCA centres questioned shortlisted candidates about their knowledge of the issues the women face.

Annetts was a sex discrimination lawyer before moving into the voluntary sector. She joins the YWCA from Dignity in Dying, which campaigns for patient choice at the end of life, where she spent six years as chief executive.

She said: "The YWCA is making a difference to the lives of disadvantaged young women, and I feel strongly that its voice should be heard on the public stage."
