Woodward joins the healthcare charity after a decade working for pharmaceutical company Schering UK. He spent four years there as sales and marketing director before being promoted to chief executive in 2001.

Woodward said: "In line with our bold investment programme, I will be taking the charity forward through a modernisation that will develop and reconfigure our specialist palliative and neurological care services across the UK, making Sue Ryder Care a first-choice provider of specialist care."

Woodward replaces Iain Henderson, who retires after five years with the charity.
