National Marine Aquarium starts social media fundraising campaign

The aquarium's partners in the campaign, Friends of Glass, will donate £1 for every #CheersTotheOcean post on social media

The Plymouth-based National Marine Aquarium is encouraging people to say "cheers" to the ocean through a fundraising social media campaign promoting glass packaging for food and drink.

The campaign, in partnership with Friends of Glass, a campaign group started by the FEVE, the membership body for the glass packaging industry, asks people to take a creative photo or short video of themselves, friends or family raising a bottle or jar in toast to the ocean or recycling glass.

They can then post it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, with the hashtag #CheersTotheOcean and tag Friends of Glass UK, which will donate £1 to the NMA’S school’s programme and its marine life-awareness Sea-lebritites initiative.

The charity hopes to raise £5,000 through the campaign.  

The best submission will win a prize of £500 worth of vouchers from the environmentally friendly travel company Responsible Travel, and three runners-up will win £100 in vouchers.

Nicola Bridge, head of discovery and learning at the NMA, said: "The funds raised from the Friends of Glass campaign will help us to continue our vital work with students and teachers to help them understand the importance of the oceans.

"There is no denying that we must work together as individuals and communities to ensure that our oceans become healthier for the benefit and enjoyment of all. We encourage everyone to get involved in this great campaign and raise a glass to say #CheerstotheOcean this summer and beyond." 

The competition closes at midnight on 28 August and the winners will be announced on 31 August.
