National Trust launches legacy donation initiative

The National Trust is offering long-term members the chance to have their names woven into a remembrance tapestry if they leave more than £1,000 to the charity in their will.

Members will also be offered the chance to have their names written into the charity's national book of remembrance and invited to special 'legacy days' at various National Trust sites to learn more about legacy giving.

The move is part of a direct marketing campaign designed by marketing firm TDA to increase legacy donations from the charity's committed supporters. About 50,000 long-term members will receive a mail pack that acknowledges that people should put their families first when writing wills, but suggests that including the trust in their legacies will benefit future generations.

"It's natural that people want to put their families first, but we want to demonstrate that it is possible, and worthwhile, to pledge a share to us as well," said Alasdair Akass, legacy development manager at the trust. "Many of them have special memories attached to our sites, and they are motivated by the notion of conserving them for everyone."
