An organisation that will advise charities on working together and broker partnerships between them will open its doors early next year.
The Collaborative Working Unit, an NCVO project, will offer guidance on anything from joint campaigns to full mergers.
It will also provide consultancy and promote the concept of collaborative working in the sector.
"The media, think-tanks and consultants often talk in sweeping terms about there being 'too many charities' and mergers being the answer," said NCVO's fundraising manager Martin Nee. "But mergers are only one form of collaboration.
The Unit will offer a full range of advice and services to voluntary organisations that are considering sharing facilities or functions, such as human resources and payroll or embarking on joint ventures."
The Bridge House Trust has provided a third of the funding and NCVO is currently seeking support from other foundations.
