The National Council for Voluntary Organisations has announced that Karl Wilding will be its new director of public policy.

Wilding, who is currently head of policy, research and foresight, will take over from deputy chief executive Ben Kernighan, who will leave to become chief executive of the National Union of Students in June. The NCVO has already said it will not seek a replacement for the position of deputy chief executive.

Wilding joined the NCVO in 1998 as a research assistant and was promoted to head of research in 2001. He will oversee the work of the NCVO’s policy, research, media and parliamentary, EU and international, and public services teams in his new role.

"This is a dream job for anyone who believes in the voluntary sector," he said. "My big priority this year is working with our members in the run-up to the next general election to ensure that charities’ priorities are on everyone’s agenda."

Sir Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the NCVO, said: "Karl is tremendously well known and respected in the sector and is one of the foremost experts in the country on many of the issues affecting charities."
