NCVO and Help the Hospices plan for the future

The NCVO is to work with Help the Hospices to carry out research on the pressures that will be faced in future by charities providing end-of-life care.

Sector umbrella body the NCVO will work with the hospice umbrella body to investigate issues such as people living longer, changing attitudes to euthanasia and government plans.

The organisations will produce a report at the end of the research, which runs until March. While the work is going on, they will publish findings and advice on the NCVO's Third Sector Foresight website.

David Praill, chief executive of Help the Hospices, which has 182 member organisations, said: "Demographic change associated with an ageing population and more people living longer with chronic and terminal illnesses, coupled with the uncertain effects of the current economic situation, mean that it is vital hospices have good information with which to plan."

Speaking at a Help the Hospices conference, Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the NCVO, said: "This is not just a research exercise. It is a practical project that will see us collaboratively explore ideas about how hospices can respond positively and proactively to a fast-changing external environment."

The scheme is one of seven projects for which the non-departmental public body Capacitybuilders has given the NCVO £400,000 of funding until 2011.
