NCVO is stepping up its support for governance in the sector in the wake of the Enron and WorldCom accounting scandals, which were widely blamed on failures in corporate governance.
The trustee and governance team at NCVO is currently made up of just two staff. Over the coming months, this will be doubled and the team will increase its range of services.
Head of the team Tesse Akpeki said: "We have been discussing this for a long time, but as it coincides with governance failures in the private sector, the new work is timely."
The team will examine what Akpeki described as "cutting-edge concepts
in voluntary-sector governance, drawing upon the latest thinking from the private sector and voluntary organisations all over the world.
One of the new team members will concentrate on governance in small local groups. In addition, the role of trusteeship in the wider society will be considered by groups of key opinion formers from the sector.
