Charities need to take advantage of an emerging breed of philanthropists from across Europe, delegates at the International Fundraising Congress in Holland were told yesterday.
Chris Carnie, director of research consultancy Factary, said he had noted a growing number of strategic philanthropists who wanted not only to give money to charity but also to become involved in policy decisions.
Carnie said these philanthropists wanted to see evidence of the impact a charity was having and they liked the idea of leveraging the money they donated.
"You need to give them the idea that their money is being turned into more money," he said.
"It is about strategic giving rather than traditional, reactive philanthropy. Above all, these philanthropists are looking for ways to use their influence to create real change."
Carnie said the shortage of major gift fundraisers in charities was a "major blockage to the development of strategic philanthropists".
He added: "People are not giving in Europe at the level they could be because they are not being asked."
