New bursaries for volunteers

London's City University has launched a bursary scheme to help volunteers for cultural charities pursue careers in the sector.

The university is offering bursaries and at least one scholarship for its MA in cultural policy and management, which trains people in running charitable organisations such as theatres, museums, galleries and studios.

It says that many people volunteer to work at these institutions but are unable to make the leap into paid employment.

One or more bursaries to the value of £550 will be awarded to UK candidates who have had substantial involvement with the cultural sector on a voluntary basis and can demonstrate financial need. A full scholarship of £4,600 will also be offered.

Vicky Woollard, deputy head of City University’s department of cultural policy and management, said she hoped better funding could improve diversity in the sector.
