Disability charity Care is being renamed Self Unlimited to change the message it sends out about its work.

Cottage And Rural Enterprises Ltd, a trading charity, offers support services for adults with learning disabilities such as housing, training, employment and leisure activities.

Its original name refers to its 1960s beginnings as a rural business selling pottery and crafts made by disabled people in Devon, but a spokeswoman for Care said the charity was keen to emphasise its message of empowerment for service users.

Self Unlimited will have a new logo. The charity will keep the name Care Ltd for registration purposes, to avoid the words ‘unlimited' and ‘limited' appearing next to each other.

Patrick Wallace, chief executive of Care, said the changes would bring the charity in line with the Government's agenda for personalising social support services.

The new name and look were unveiled at a reception in London yesterday evening.
