New rules for ads on gambling may slow Lottery sales

A relaxation of the rules that restrict advertising of gambling could threaten National Lottery ticket sales, a leading commentator has warned.

The Government's White Paper on the future of gambling, released on 26 March, will allow other forms of gambling to advertise in competition with the Lottery.

Luke FitzHerbert, researcher at the Directory of Social Change, said: "Let's use the Lottery while we can, because a gambling free-for-all is on the way, which will be more damaging than all the good work of the Lottery put together."

A spokeswoman for the Community Fund did not share his fears. She said that Camelot's forthcoming marketing campaign would combat such a threat.

The Community Fund had feared that the White Paper could hit National Lottery ticket sales by removing the limits on society lottery prizes and a lifting of the ban on side-betting on the National Lottery. However, the White Paper maintains these restrictions.
