NGO sets up to give companies lead on harmful emissions

The world's first international NGO concerned solely with climate change issues will be launched in January.

The UK-based organisation, provisionally called The Climate Group, has been commissioned and funded by the US-based Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.

"There are thousands of organisations working on climate change, but none acting as a central international hub," said operations manager Jim Walker.

The Climate Group has identified several companies and governments as potential partners. These include Dupont, BP, Lafarge Cement and IKEA, as well as governments including the UK.

"Our key messages are that reducing greenhouse gas emissions doesn't have to be economically painful, and promoting examples of how it has been done in a cost-effective way," said Walker. "You can either bash companies or you can provide them with a resource for meeting commitments to reduce greenhouse gases."
