Nicky Morgan has retained her responsibility for charities after being promoted to the role of Financial Secretary to the Treasury in a cabinet reshuffle earlier this week, the Treasury has confirmed.

On Wednesday, Maria Miller resigned as culture secretary after widespread criticism over the way in which she had handled her expenses. Her resignation sparked a Cabinet reshuffle in which Morgan was moved from the position of Economic Secretary to the Treasury to her new role, with the former financial secretary, Sajid Javid, taking over Miller's old post.

The Treasury said that Morgan would still be responsible for "charities, the voluntary sector and Gift Aid".

Andrea Leadsom, the MP for South Northamptonshire, will replace her as Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
