Night blight

The Council for the Protection of Rural England has teamed up with the British Astronomical Association to launch an awareness campaign on increasing light pollution over the UK. A report published by the two organisations claims that street lighting and urban sprawl have contributed to a 24 per cent increase in light pollution between 1993 (left) and 2000 (right). The light blue areas on the satellite maps indicate the growing problem. Only 11 per cent of England now has dark skies, which severely limits the number of available areas to view the full range of star constellations.
