The number of charities removed from the Charity Commission’s register fell by more than 30 per cent last year compared with 2011.
Data compiled from the commission’s website by the accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy found that 1,619 charities came off the commission’s register in 2012, compared with 2,359 the year before.
A spokeswoman for the commission said the figures were likely to have been affected by two factors that led to large numbers of removals occurring in previous years.
In 2008 and 2009, she said, the commission contacted a large number of charities that had not filed documents for some time and asked them to confirm whether they were still active. The commission announced in 2009 that 7,423 organisations were removed from the register of charities in the year to the end of March 2009.
In 2007, said the spokeswoman, the commission also raised the registration income threshold from £1,000 to £5,000.
Charities were wound up for a number of reasons, she said, including financial difficulties, trustee issues or a lack of volunteers.
John Howard, partner and head of not-for-profit at Wilkins Kennedy, said that although the number of charities being removed from the register had fallen, many were still struggling financially.
