Office for Civil Society unveiled by Cabinet Office

Tory Nick Hurd will be Minister for Civil Society in what used to be the Office of the Third Sector

The Office of the Third Sector has been renamed the Office for Civil Society, the Cabinet Office has confirmed.

The department has also announced that Nick Hurd's official title will be Minister for Civil Society.

Angela Smith, the previous charities minister, was given the role at minister of state level, but Hurd's role is at the more junior parliamentary secretary level.

A spokesman for the Office for Civil Society said the change did not mean the role was any less important. "I don't think the sector should worry about that," he said. "What will matter are the policies."

The Conservatives pledged to rename the Office of the Third Sector and establish an Office for Civil Society to take the lead in implementing the party's big society agenda.
