Mary Shephard, deputy director at Animal Aid, offers insider insight into the head of fundraising opportunity it's recruiting for.

Tell me about Animal Aid and the work you do

The head of fundraising role is an exciting opportunity to take the lead in our fundraising department. We have recently developed a dynamic and new fundraising strategy, and the successful candidate for this role will be responsible for driving this forward and ensuring that we increase our capacity to make a real difference for animals. You will have plenty of scope to bring fresh ideas to the role and evaluate the success of existing schemes.

We need someone with experience of fundraising issues, such as major donors, legacies, memberships, digital fundraising.  Candidates need to be able to develop our fundraising strategy and have excellent writing skills. Candidates should be vegetarian or vegan, or about to change to an animal-free diet.

Why would someone want to work for Animal Aid?

Animal Aid is a compassionate and caring organisation trying to create a kinder world. By eliminating animal products from diets, we aim to promote healthier and more compassionate living.  We campaign for a better existence for all animals by exposing the horrors of their production and slaughter.  Animal Aid is a family and close knit team. We have a thriving Education Department giving hundreds of talks each year and producing films for students. We offer staff training courses as and when required, according to individual and team needs within the charity.

Can you tell me about any exciting projects you're working on?

We are currently working on CCTV in slaughterhouses, where we have achieved great success, with the government announcing plans to introduce cameras.  We also have a Mice Matter campaign to highlight the pointless and extensive use of mice in laboratory experiments. Animals make poor models for humans and give misleading results.  We campaign for the complete abolition of the use of animals in experiments.  The Grand National is also an going campaign to highlight the cruelty of the racing industry. Wildlife culls, such as squirrels, deer are also an issue.

In a nutshell, how would you describe what it's like to work for Animal Aid?

Animal Aid is a family of dedicated and compassionate people.  We have a great team and it’s a great place to work.
