Oxfam Christmas card sales fall by 14 per cent

Charity survey also shows that Britons plan to send 141 million fewer cards than they did five years ago

Oxfam’s Christmas card sales, which usually receives about £1m annually from Christmas card sales, are down 14 per cent on last year, the charity has revealed.

It released the information alongside a YouGov survey that showed that Britons plan to send 141 million fewer cards this year.

Thirty-six per cent of 2,328 people polled for the charity said they would send fewer cards this Christmas than they did five years ago.

Britons are expected to send 882 million cards this year, compared with 1.02 billion in 2005.

The online survey found a need to save money was the joint-top reason behind the drop, with 22 per cent of consumers tightening their belts.

The same proportion are rejecting cards on environmental grounds.

An increase in postage costs is prompting 21 per cent of people to send fewer cards, while 18 per cent think cards are no longer an important part of Christmas.

Thirteen per cent of respondents will send online greetings instead.

Only 12 per cent of people polled plan to send more cards than they did five years ago, with 43 per cent sending about the same number.
