Oxfam has launched Oxjam, a volunteer recruitment drive that will use music to try to engage young people in fundraising and volunteering.
Members of the public across the UK will take part in events throughout this month. Activities such as a disco in an Oxfam shop window and a 24-hour busk will aim to raise £500,000.
A team of 16 volunteers will act as area co-ordinators, but Oxfam is also encouraging people to organise their own events.
Oxfam has also teamed up with MTV to spend £285,000 from volunteering charity v's match fund on an initiative to find the best up-and-coming musical talent.
"Most of our volunteers are over 50 and we hope Oxjam will help us to engage with 16 to 24 year-olds whom we have not been able to reach before," said a spokesman. "We are using music to get them interested and hope they will go on to take part in our campaigns."
