Pants world record under threat during volunteers' week

An attempt by Exeter Volunteer Bureau to fit hundreds of people into the world's largest pair of pants is among 300 events organised by 250 charities for the 19th volunteers' week from 1-7 June.

The white elasticated pants with a 10-metre waist and with a five-metre gusset will feature at Exeter Rugby Club on 7 June. "The record is for the biggest pants, the rest is just for fun," said a spokesman at the bureau.

The week, organised by several organisations headed by the National Centre for Volunteering, aims to recruit new volunteers. The volunteering promotion body TimeBank has provided publicity advice to local community centres, while Abbey National and Marks & Spencer are sponsoring the awareness week.

Next year's event is likely to be organised by a new entity, called Volunteering England, as the National Centre for Volunteering, Volunteer Development England and Consortium on Opportunities for Volunteering are to merge.
