Party line

Conservative leader Michael Howard answered telephones at Shepway Volunteer Centre in his Folkestone and Hythe constituency last Friday. Howard became a volunteer receptionist for two hours, answering calls from prospective volunteers and putting them through to centre manager Janet Johnson (right). His stint was aimed at showing support for the Year of the Volunteer, and came during a week in which his party slipped from 1 per cent to 6 per cent behind Labour in a Daily Telegraph-commissioned YouGov poll of likely general election voting patterns. Fellow volunteer Pauline Sales is on the left.
