The fundraising company Payroll Giving in Action has launched what is believed to be the first payroll giving service through mobile phones.
The Devon-based organisation already offers a Giving Online service, which allows people to donate to charities through their employers' payroll giving schemes by using a website.
It has now optimised the service so that it can be used on smartphones, including iPhones and BlackBerrys.
The new service, called GO Mobile, is free to set up and does not charge commission on donations. Payroll Giving in Action said it was the first mobile phone payroll giving scheme in the UK.
A spokeswoman for the Charities Aid Foundation, which runs the UK’s largest payroll giving scheme, Give As You Earn, agreed that it had not heard of another similar service.
Payroll Giving in Action is also offering employers and charities QR codes for the service. The codes look like barcodes and can be used on promotional posters. When employees take a picture of the code on their phones, it automatically takes them to the relevant GO Mobile page.
"It’s all optimised so the donor has to do as little work as possible to make a donation," said Jeremy Colwill, director of Payroll Giving in Action.
