Payroll giving 'will continue to rise'

Payroll giving donations will continue to rise despite the current financial turmoil, Workplace Giving UK has predicted.

HM Revenue & Customs figures published two weeks ago on the Institute of Fundraising's Payroll Giving Centre website revealed that an extra £20m was donated through company payrolls last year compared with 2006. The scheme raised £109m in 2007.

"Part of the upward trend is due to more employees having access to a scheme," said Peter O'Hara, managing director of Workplace Giving UK, which promotes payroll giving. "If this momentum continues, I have no doubt of the continued success of donating in this way."

Workplace Giving UK launched the Government-backed campaign Geared for Giving in May to raise awareness of the scheme among employers. Another 172,000 employees now have access to the scheme.
