Politics: Offenders to 'give something back'

Community groups will be able to suggest projects for regeneration work to be carried out by offenders under a new government scheme.

The Mayors' Community Payback Scheme 2007 asks mayors across the UK to nominate worthy projects for renovation or construction throughout the year.

One mayor from each of the 42 probation areas in the UK can nominate a project or invite community groups to suggest an initiative.

Home Secretary John Reid said offenders would work unpaid on projects to "give something back to the community" in areas where they have committed crimes.
