Praise be: sector courts the Pope

Euclid Network hopes to arrange audience with the pontiff for charities

The Euclid Network, the European arm of chief executives body Acevo, is hoping to arrange an audience with the Pope for sector organisations.

Filippo Addarii, director of the Euclid Network, came up with the idea in response to an encyclical from Pope Benedict in June that emphasised charity as a solution to the economic crisis.

An encyclical is a letter about Catholic doctrine that is addressed to bishops and the wider world.

Addarii told Third Sector: "Catholic organisations have a presence in the third sector, but popes have never been interested in the sector as a concept before. The encyclical puts it at the centre of economic theory."

He said the meeting was not yet confirmed, but if it went ahead he would try to draw up a list of delegates that was as diverse as possible and included Muslim organisations.

Addarii said the meeting would boost the sector's "soft power" and make the point that it was as vital as other sectors.
