Quality standard for volunteering

Volunteering England has launched a quality standard for employee volunteering as it emerged that Girlguiding UK has a waiting list of 50,000 because volunteer leaders cannot get time off.

Girlguiding UK called on companies to show more commitment to employer-supported volunteering schemes after a survey of its adult membership revealed that only 16 per cent felt their employers actively encouraged them to volunteer.

Liz Smith, who leads the charity's volunteer recruitment programme, said: "Many employees want to volunteer but don't feel they can fit it around work."

The new standard was announced as Volunteering Week came to an end today.
