More queries for childcare charity

Shadow third sector minister Greg Clark is calling for the Charity Commission to open an investigation into the governance of a charity at the centre of a row for making a donation to the Labour Party.

Childcare charity Catz Club was forced to take back a £7,500 donation to Labour last week after Clark reported it (Third Sector Online, 5 September). It was also forced to accept the return of a further £7,500 it had paid Labour for the privilege of attending an event at which it could lobby ministers.

Clark said he wanted to know how this "was a remotely appropriate use of charity funds" and said it suggested there was "something very wrong with the judgement of trustees".

A spokeswoman for the charity, whose former trustees include ex-Labour general secretary Baroness McDonagh, said: "This was an alternative way for us to meet people who take a keen interest in the provision of after-school childcare and the work that we do."
