Question marks over Scope chief

Scope is expected to make a statement this week about the future of its chief executive, Tony Manwaring.

According to sources in disability charities, Manwaring has been replaced by the charity's finance director, Jon Sparkes. Scope declined to confirm the changes as Third Sector went to press.

Manwaring was the driving force behind the charity's greater emphasis on campaigning, which included 2004's Time to Get Equal campaign. He also hired Andy Rickell, former chief executive of the campaign group the British Council of Disabled People, in the newly created post of director of diversity in 2004.

Scope is facing a predicted financial deficit of £10.1m in its latest accounting year. It also closed 50 "serial loss-making" shops in January.
