Reading matters

Young readers celebrate the launch of Volunteer Reading Help's 'Reading Reborn: The Book Hook Campaign' at the British Library on 24 October. The charity launched the campaign to celebrate its 30th birthday, and hopes it will encourage members of the public to sign up as volunteers to help children who are struggling with their reading skills. The campaign will ask volunteers to 'book-hook' the children they support, and to match each child with a book that suits their individual needs. The charity also plans to take books to children in deprived areas and is using the campaign to try to raise more funds to expand its current programmes and services. Since it launched in 1973 the charity estimates that it has helped more than 80,000 children become interested in reading.
