Recycling free advice

Consultancy firm WSP Environment and Energy has launched a programme to offer charities free advice on issues such as energy and water use, recycling and waste management.

The firm hopes to support up to 10 charities in the scheme's inaugural year.

"Charities need to develop clear policies and strategies to reduce their overall environmental impact," said Stuart McLachlan, managing director of WSP. "Many charities are keen to address these issues, but don't have the resources or the expertise in house to set clear direction."

Meanwhile, two charities are among the finalists for the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, presented on 19 June at the Royal Geographical Society in London.

Global Action Plan has been selected for its scheme to tackle bad environmental habits among office workers across the UK. And the Energy Agency, Ayrshire, has used profits generated by a wind farm to carry out environmental audits for nearby houses, which then saved money on fuel bills.
