Redundancy enquiries rise sharply for voluntary sector helpline

London Voluntary Service Council says calls have more than doubled on last year

The proportion of calls about redundancy and restructuring to a helpline for voluntary organisations has more than doubled from last year.

Between April and June, 37 per cent of the 112 callers to the personnel, employment, advice and conciliation helpline run by the London Voluntary Service Council were about redundancy and restructuring. In the same period in 2008, the figure was 18 per cent.

"This shows that organisations are already looking at how they can reallocate resources and cut costs in the face of the recession and public spending cuts," said Peter Lewis, chief executive of LVSC, the voluntary sector network for the capital.

He predicted the situation would worsen this year. "Lots of organisations' funding ends in March and they will start thinking about what to do long before then," said Lewis.

LVSC is expected to publish its final Big Squeeze report on the recession this month. The report will outline the experiences of more than 100 London voluntary organisations.
