4,426 - of these provide services, 3,434 provide advice, advocacy and information, and 2,351 make grants to individuals

5,574 - support older people, 4,026 count people with disabilities as among their beneficiaries and 1,663 help people of a particular ethnic or racial origin

196 - charities have annual incomes of more than £10m. These include Help for Heroes, Greensleeves Homes Trust and Norwood Ravenswood

1,361 - have incomes of between £10,000 and £25,000. These include almshouses, refuges and benevolent trusts

874 - are overdue in filing their most recent accounts with the Charity Commission
