29,692 charities say they work for "the prevention or relief of poverty", according to documents filed with the Charity Commission

18,255 of these charities help children and young people; 16,021 help older people

190 of the charities have been on the register since 1961, the year it began; 504 have joined since the beginning of 2012

190 have incomes of more than £10m a year. They include Care International UK and the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor

4,081 have annual incomes of between £2 and £1,000; 3,808 have annual incomes between £1,001 and £5,000

2,661 are overdue in filing their latest documents with the commission. They include Age Concern Westminster, whose income in 2008/09 was £1.4m. Its latest documents are 258 days overdue, according to the commission's records
