Regulator investigates trust for false claim of charitable status

The Charity Commission is investigating an organisation for continuing to claim it was a charity after being stripped of charitable status.

The International Tiger Moth Charitable Trust, which operates under the name Tigers for Kids, was removed from the register of charities in July 2008 when the commission discovered it had been struck off the register at Companies House four years earlier for failing to submit its accounts.

The Rochdale-based organisation, which offers pleasure flights in a vintage aircraft for terminally ill children, has said it had accidentally left its old registration number on its website because it had submitted an application to reregister with the commission in October. The number had been covered by the word ‘pending' on the organisation's website yesterday.

The commission said it had not received any resubmitted application. A spokesman said: "Concerns have been raised with us regarding the organisation and we are assessing these concerns.

"We have recently spoken with a representative of the organisation, at which time we clarified that our assessment was still ongoing. Once that process has been completed, we will look at the appropriate way forward in this matter."

Bryan Matthews, a trustee at the charity, said that it had sent reregistration documents to the commission in October but they had been lost.

"We have re-sent the application via special delivery," he said.

"We have not actively done any fundraising while we have been offline as a charity and have returned any unsolicited donations."

Matthews said he hoped the charity would be able to meet representatives from the commission to resolve the issue.
