Relate ties with gay body for launch of same-sex service

Relate has joined forces with the Lesbian and Gay Foundation to offer counselling services to same-sex couples.

Under the initiative, counsellors will be recruited and trained from within the lesbian and gay communities. The service has also been launched in order to give same-sex couples the choice of visiting either charity for advice.

"Some same-sex couples may have hesitated before turning to us for support because of our legacy of providing marriage guidance services, but partnerships like this will reinforce the message that Relate's focus is on all forms of adult intimate relationships,

said Sue Parkes, chief executive of Relate Manchester.

"What is important is that same-sex couples get as much relationship support as heterosexual couples, and by partnering with the Gay and Lesbian Foundation we're going to be able to provide some really useful services at both centres,

she added.

The project will launch in Manchester but could be rolled out across the country.
