Report shows need for further funding to umbrella bodies

More Government funding should be made available to enable umbrella and support organisations such as the NACVS and the Charities Evaluation Services to identify areas where performance could be improved, according to the latest strategy report by the Quality Standards Task Group.

Ian Bruce, of City University's CASS Business School, who chaired the group, said: "This is an opportunity for the Government to put significant resources into capacity-building for the sector. Last week, Alan Milburn suggested that charities should take a greater role in public services, which is the first time a senior Labour figure has clearly said that.

"It's my belief that the voluntary sector has never fulfilled its real growth potential. This report is written by the sector - it sets out what we believe we can do. The Government has said what it wants the sector to do, now it's up to the Government to resource it."

This is the first of four strategies that will feed into the Capacity and Infrastructure Framework, the response to the Treasury's cross-cutting review of the voluntary and community sectors.
