Richard Branson urges business to help small charities

Corporates should put cash aside to fund community projects, says Virgin boss

Businesses should put money aside to support local community projects, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson told a conference yesterday.

Speaking at a conference called Raising Funds from the Rich, held in London, Branson was asked how local community organisations without recognisable brands could persuade big businesses to support them.

"You should try to appeal to the individual person that reads your letter," he said. "I think corporates should be doing better on local community funding and putting money aside for it. We'll bear that in mind."

Branson said charities applying for funding from businesses should adopt the approach used on social networking site Twitter and convince the organisation in 140 characters that it should get involved.
