Rooster booster

Compassion In World Farming's political director Peter Stevenson poses with Charlie the Chicken to raise awareness of today's court case against the Government to try to stop farmers rearing fast-growing 'broiler' chickens. The charity is challenging the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs in the High Court over its policies on chicken meat production in the UK. It will argue that the Government is breaching the law by permitting the rearing of broiler chickens for meat in unacceptable and illegal conditions. The law states that no animal can be kept for farming if raised in an environment that has a detrimental effect on its health, but CIWF argues that broiler chickens suffer from serious physical disorders and chronic hunger in some farms. The charity is publishing a report, 'The Welfare of Broiler Chickens in the EU', to support its court case.
