Scottish regulator strikes off 85 charities

OSCR to pursue a further 790 over failure to submit annual accounts

The OSCR is removing 85 charities from the Scottish Charity Register after discovering that they were no longer active. And it is pursuing a further 790 charities that are listed as "defaulting" because they have failed to submit annual accounts despite repeated reminders.

The 790 charities have been instructed to provide the required information, and most have given the OSCR assurance that they will comply, an OSCR spokesman said.

"We are in dialogue with these organisations and have a clear procedure by which we find out exactly why they are defaulting," he said. "The bulk of them have confirmed that they will supply the information."

The 85 charities that are being removed have either been verified as inactive after the process or have served their charitable purposes and wound up.

The OSCR can remove charities from the register if they fail to comply with accounts regulations.

Jane Ryder, chief executive of the OSCR, said: "This action is part of our ongoing work to build and maintain an accurate charity register. We aim to engage with defaulting charities to explain their responsibilities and the consequences of continued non-compliance, and this is usually effective."

There are 23,300 charities listed on the Scottish Charity Register. The final list of removed charities is expected to be released in the next two weeks.
